Hesperus is Phosphorus CD - $20*   I Want To Live CD - $20*   Christmas Daybreak CD - $20*

Pulitzer laureate Lewis Spratlan's imaginative Hesperus is Phosphorus was commissioned and performed here by The Crossing and Network for New Music. Building a libretto with texts ranging from Adrienne Rich and Richard Feynman to David Eagleman and the Magnificat, Lewis offers a re-examination of our perceptions and the discoveries found in rethinking them from a wider perspective.

Referred to by The Philadelphia Inquirer's David Patrick Stearns as "a composition tour-de-force," this hour-long, nine-movement work for mixed chorus and chamber ensemble is a sonic bath, at times truly hysterical, at others deeply moving.

The remarkable Women of The Crossing offer a recording that is as virtuosic as it is emotional, resonating with recurring themes of desire and strength, peace, and longing. Featuring Pulitzer Laureate David Lang's this condition(2005), his wrenching I live in pain (written for the ensemble in 2010) and the title track, I want to live(2004) and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s ultra-minimal, brilliant Statements is contrasted in the richly textured, Tibetan-inspired works of Paul Fowler; his Echoes (2010), also written for the ensemble.

Finally, William Brooks’ Six Mediaeval Lyrics (2006), written for Trio Mediaeval and expanded in scope and texture for The Crossing. This is an hour of some of today’s finest choral writing for women’s ensemble and a must-have for followers of these composers.

Christmas Daybreak captures the honest clarity and thoughtful artistry of The Crossing.  Includes the world premiere recording of James MacMillan's dramatic motet "Alpha and Omega" and works of Andrew Gant, Edwin Fissinger, and Gabriel Jackson (featured on four tracks). Premiere recordings of two works featuring beloved tunes in creative contemporary arrangements center this collection: Benjamin C.S. Boyle's The Carols for Wintertide (featuring Lo how a rose) and Zachary Wadsworth's Gabriel's Message (on the familiar Basque tune) - both featured Scott Dettra at the colorful organ of St. Paul's Church, Chestnut Hill, whose choir joins The Crossing for Wadsorth's new opus.
